Molly Goddard responds to political uncertainty in her AW19 Collection

Combining the whimsical with the practical, this collection provides the perfect designs to prepare you for the storms ahead.

For Molly Goddard, Autumn/ Winter 19 was all about bolstering her frothy, delicate dresses. These are now recognised globally thanks to their prime time exposure on BBC Drama, ‘Killing Eve’ seen on female assassin Villanelle, which she wore juxtaposed with her bovver boots and a black bra. Goddard developed this design in an even bigger and better version for the collection which graced the runway in her finale featuring a statement 200 metre tiered fuchsia ball gown.

Meters away from Goddard’s imposing foreign office location a show of another was taking place as Theresa May grappled with the latest Brexit situation in the Houses of Parliament. It was clear that this was going to be no ordinary fashion show. Anticipation was in the air as guests made their way through the high security with even the likes of Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s Editor in Chief being made to wear his red visitors pass on arrival to contrast his tuxedo. This fashion crowd were stepping into new territory.

Molly described her girls as “stomping through a storm” and prepared for a storm they were. Wrapped up in the protection of balaclavas and scarves printed with bright harlequin patterns on top of her signature frills as well as adding eccentric eiderdown inspired clutches.

Throughout the collection she has incorporated her own take on traditional British motifs in contrast to the Mediterranean feel she embodied last season. By adding patchwork finishing’s, argyle knits and vintage lurex ribbon Goddard added a sense of nostalgia to her collection. Through laying all her dresses with robust and functional tailoring seen in the pinstripe suits worn underneath them, Goddard has stepped away from the sole fairy tale element of her designs. She proves that with the brightest colours consisting of sorbet yellow, neon green and fuchsia pink that you do not have to make a choice between being fun and practical.

With the uncertainty of our current political climate there is one thing we can be sure of and that is the success of Molly Goddard for another season.
